The Sequence of Tenses principle dictates the tense of verbs in subordinate clauses based on the tense in the principal clause. Two main rules govern this: past tense in the principal clause requires past tense in the subordinate clause; present or future tense in the principal clause allows any tense in the subordinate clause as required by sense
