According to the information given by Herodotus, the Massagetae tribe lived in the lowlands of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers in the eastern Caspian Sea (Desert). Strabo also mentions the Massagetae. The Greeks believed that the name "Massagetae" was not the real name of any nation but should be a nickname that describes the lifestyle of the people
