Middle English vocabulary underwent changes during the Middle Ages due to heavy borrowing from French, with approximately 10,000 words entering the language between 1250–1450. The borrowing occurred in two phases, with about 900 words borrowed during the period of 1066–1250. The borrowed words showed the influence of Anglo-Norman phonology. The vocabulary was influenced in various domains including social, literary, and church-related terms.
